The Rise of AI-Driven Business Intelligence
Artificial intelligence is significantly expanding the capabilities of traditional business intelligence platforms by making analytics more accessible, predictive, and automated.
One of the most impactful developments is the integration of natural language processing (NLP) into BI tools. Instead of relying on complex query languages or pre-built dashboards, business users can ask questions in plain language, such as “What were the top-performing regions last quarter?” and receive immediate visualized results. The shift toward natural language querying democratizes analytics by enabling non-technical users to explore data directly, reducing reliance on data teams and accelerating decision making.
Another major advancement is the rise of conversational BI interfaces. Through chat-based or voice-enabled analytics assistants, users can interact with data iteratively and conversationally. Simply put, conversational BI reduces the learning curve associated with using analytics tools. That gives executives and business teams the ability to interrogate data during meetings or decision-making processes without requiring specialized expertise.
BI Becomes More Predictive
AI is also transforming BI from a primarily descriptive discipline into a predictive and prescriptive one. Machine learning models embedded within BI platforms can analyze historical data to identify patterns and forecast future outcomes, enabling organizations to anticipate demand, detect anomalies, and proactively manage risk. For example, predictive analytics can highlight emerging supply chain disruptions, forecast customer churn, or estimate sales performance under different scenarios. By integrating these predictive insights directly into dashboards and reports, BI systems evolve from static reporting environments into forward-looking decision support platforms.
AI Makes Data Access Easier
AI is also streamlining one of the most complex aspects of BI deployments: data preparation and integration. Automated data integration tools powered by machine learning can identify relationships between disparate datasets, detect schema inconsistencies, and recommend transformations needed for analysis. These capabilities dramatically reduce the time spent on manual data wrangling, which historically consumes the majority of analytics project timelines. As a result, organizations can integrate more data sources, creating richer, more timely intelligence for business users.

ACM Tech Brief: LLM Build vs. Buy is Not a Binary Choice
The Association for Computing Machinery’s Technology Policy Council is warning policymakers against treating the decision to “build or buy” AI systems as a simple binary choice. In a new report, “TechBrief: Buy Versus Build an LLM,” ACM outlines a strategic framework for governments evaluating how to acquire and deploy national-scale AI systems. The report cautions that poorly structured decisions could expose countries to vendor lock-in, capability gaps, escalating costs, or weakened digital sovereignty.
The report notes that building can strengthen national autonomy and allow systems to be tailored to local languages, laws, and cultural context. Still, it requires significant investment in talent and computing infrastructure. In contrast, buying can accelerate deployment and reduce upfront operational complexity yet may increase long-term dependence on outside vendors and limit strategic flexibility.
The authors of the report urge government decision-makers to consider several factors when making the build-versus-buy decision. Those considerations include:
· Sovereignty and concentration risk: The top three providers capture 88% of the enterprise API market, raising concerns about over-reliance during elections or national crises.
· Data confidentiality and misuse risks: Governments must protect citizen data against leakage, inversion, and reconstruction attacks.
· Total cost of ownership: Training runs often represent only a fraction of full costs, which can be 1.2x-4x higher than the final training expenditure alone. Both capital expenditure and operating expenditure need to be taken into account.
· National fit: Poor alignment with local languages or legal norms can amplify misinformation and erode public trust.
DARPA Expands Quantum Benchmarking Initiative
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) announced it is expanding its Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI). The move is driven by two factors: The increased interest in quantum computing and the rapidly growing number of organizations offering solutions. Of particular interest are entrants with distinct approaches that have not yet been evaluated under QBI.
Organizations that QBI has not yet funded are invited to join under a new Stage A Quantum Benchmarking Initiative Topic (QBIT). The work builds on QBI’s ongoing effort to determine whether any quantum computing architecture can achieve utility-scale operation by 2033, meaning its computational value exceeds its cost.
Since its launch in mid-2024, QBI has evaluated approaches from 20 commercial companies spanning a variety of qubit architectures. Eleven organizations have advanced to Stage B for deeper technical risk-reduction and development planning. Additionally, two performers from the Underexplored Systems for Utility-Scale Quantum Computing (US2QC) pilot program have advanced to Stage C, working with the government to verify and validate system-level operation.
